Established in 1991, the Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund created a dedicated revenue source for statewide affordable housing programs. At Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties, Sadowski funds are used to ensure mortgage affordability for the lowest income families in our homeownership program. Additionally, the funds allow us to retrofit homes, making necessary accommodations for seniors and individuals with disabilities.
However, since the early 2000s, Florida lawmakers have been raiding the Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund and using the monies to fill budgetary shortfalls in the general revenue fund. In total, more than $2.2 billion has been swept from the trust fund, and last year Lee County lost $7.5 million in affordable housing funds.
These sweeps are hurting local families.
Thankfully, Governor DeSantis has introduced a budget that fully funds the Sadowski Affordable Housing Trust Fund. However, the legislature can still pass a budget that continues the harmful tradition of raiding the Sadowski funds.
Join us in telling Governor DeSantis to stop the sweeps by line-item vetoing any proposed sweeps from the state legislature. Add your name to personalize the message.
